Located on the island of Tahiti, the mythical wave of Teahupo’o has been chosen to welcome the surfing contests of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. According to the Paris 2024 Committee, this is an opportunity to showcase “the rich and diverse heritage of France'' as it is the first time that French overseas territories are being included in the Olympics.
However, this opportunity comes with a high environmental price. The initial project involved the implementation of a new tower for the judges over the reef of Teahupo’o. This project has been controversial among the population because of its environmental impacts but the authorities are engaging in active dialogue with local concerns to ensure that the games are carried out safely.
